The Five Great Questions to Ask at a Networking Event
By Heather Halligan, Marketing Manager and Michelle Hoffman, Business Development Coordinator
Have you ever felt at a loss for words when you attend a networking event?
It can be overwhelming and intimidating to strike up a conversation with a stranger, but we’re here to help!
While great conversations flow naturally and aren’t forced, it’s always a good idea to come prepared with some icebreaker questions to get the discussion going.
Here are five of our top questions to ask the next time you attend a networking event.
1. What Got You Interested in Today’s Event?
This is probably one of the first questions you should be asking someone outside of their name. It’s a great way to engage people who may be new or unfamiliar with the organization. And if you’re unfamiliar, it’s a learning opportunity.
You can even use this one as you stand in line waiting for food or a drink as a nice way to introduce yourself and allow for further discussion later.
2. What is a Client or Project That Was Memorable in a Great Way for You?
Not only does this question give the person an opportunity to share a positive experience, but you might find a lead for your organization.
This also opens a discussion about the project they did, who was involved, what challenges they faced and could spur ideas for you to run a similar project.
Networking events are one of the best places for making meaningful relationships. With a little preparation, they can be fun and engaging instead of scary and daunting.
3. Who is Your Ideal Client?
This question helps you determine if you can refer business or if there’s a mutual fit. Maybe that person you’re talking to is not an ideal client, but you know someone else who would be.
Now that you’ve referred business, you’re more likely to have business referred back to you.
4. What is Your Role?
This is one of the best ways to understand someone’s professional background so you can look for opportunities to work together.
Even if they work in an industry you don’t normally work with, they might know someone who does work in your industry and refer business to you. As an added bonus, it’s an opportunity to learn about other industries.
5. Where Have You Found the Most Interesting Opportunity to Network?
This will help you find new events to attend or organizations to explore, opening doors for future connections.
Especially in a midsize city like Grand Rapids, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of networking opportunities every year. You might need to occasionally branch out from the same events to find new relationships.
